Students with gifts and talents

Gifted Education Mentors (GEM) program

At Marshall Road State School our GEM Program aims to:

  • Identify gifted and talented students.
  • Provide a curriculum that enable gifted and talented students to develop and achieve to their potential.
  • Implement a collaborative team approach to support gifted and talented students.

Whole school approach

1. Teachers use current data from school-based screening and assessment to identify students. Checklists for the identification of gifted and talented students may also be used.

2. Students' needs may be accommodated by the classroom teacher through  differentiated curriculum and activities within the classroom which could include:

  • adjusting tasks

  • using a faster pace

  • challenging and supporting students to set learning goals, develop higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving strategies, critical and creative thinking and self-reflection

  • pursuing their interests in independent inquiries.

3. Students may also be  referred to the Student Needs Committee for further possible assessments.
